Chinese factory shutdown, how does it affect Tesla electric cars?

Tesla deliveries fell nearly 18% in the second quarter of 2022 after its factory in China was shut down.

Tesla delivered just 254,695 electric vehicles globally in the second quarter, down nearly 18% from the previous period due to supply chain constraints, China's extended COVID-19 lockdown, and challenges keeping its factories in Berlin and Austin, Texas, operating.

This is the first time in two years that Tesla's deliveries, which were 310,048 in the first quarter of this year, have fallen from the previous quarter. But overall, Tesla's electric vehicle deliveries were up 26.5% compared to the second quarter of last year.

Tesla's electric vehicle deliveries fell nearly 18% in the second quarter of 2022.

The decline from the previous quarter was related to supply chain issues in the industry. It also showed the importance of Tesla's Shanghai factory to its business. Tesla closed its Shanghai factory several times in March as rising COVID-19 cases prompted the government to impose lockdowns.

The company said on Saturday, July 2, that it produced 258,580 electric vehicles, down 15% from the previous quarter when it produced 305,407 vehicles.

Like other quarters over the past two years, most of the vehicles produced and delivered were Model 3s and Model Ys. The older Model S and Model X models only had 16,411 vehicles produced.

Tesla said in a release that June 2022 was the highest production month in Tesla’s history. Despite that milestone, the electric carmaker, like others in the industry, has struggled to meet demand amid ongoing supply chain issues.
